May 3

Ken brought the word back that grandpa died at 7:50 last night. Shelby and Ora stayed down home until 11 o'clock. He and Mabel stayed here rest of night. Mable and I did the 3 washings this morning. Set 11 more duck eggs at noon. Went to Hayden this afternoon. Cast my vote, for the first time. Did several odd jobs this evening. Mama, Ora and I are going down home.

May 2

Ken told about grandpa's condition when he was there at 10 last nite. I went down to Mables before breakfast. Mable and Shelby came along about 7:30 and Ora and I went down to Seymour with them. We cleaned the folks back yard. Grandpa has lock-jaw and is in a critical condition. Can't eat nor rest, hardly talk plain. Cleaned off chicken roosts. Ora and Shelby have gone back to set up tonite. Mable is staying with me. We have sorted her clothes, ours and mamma's out, ready to wash tomorrow.

MAY 1, 1932

Dad, Ora and I went to Sun. school. Rena was there about 10 minutes. I told Harriett just what I thought about her. We four went down home this afternoon to see grandpa Perry. He surely is laid up and pretty back off today. Helped to do the milking, shelled some corn. Set 84 duck eggs. Mable and Shelby were here tonite.

April 30

Helped do the mornings work. Mowed the yard. Rena and I went to Mashing's to get duck eggs. Got 80 for one cent apiece. Rena slept most all morning. We were ready to start to Scipio when Harriett came at 12 and took Rena for the afternoon. Stopped at Mabels. Dad and the kids were there. Grandpa didn't come home, wasn't able. Harriett returned at four with Rena but had her bribed and monopolised for the night; when she had planned to stay here again. Almost heart-broken but guess 'twill heal in time. Studied S. school lesson.

April 29

Cleaned the house up. Made 58 popcorn balls for the party, which we are giving in honor of Rena. Mr. and Mrs. Simmons, Howard, Clarence and Flossie, Mable, Shelby, Violet, Bill, Harriett and Rena were here. Rena is staying all nite. Has rained all evening and is pouring now. 11:30.

April 28

Nice warm day but real frosty this A.M. Cleaned chicken roosts and chicks coops off. Spaded the ground where I will set out gladiolas. I went to Dr. at North Vernon this P.M. Going back to the drop medicine. I have a bad cold. Did some patching this evening.

April 27

A little frost and real cool. Rena came as the Capes kids went to school. She and I did the ironing. Violet, Mabel, Rena and I visited school this P.M. Mama went to Wandas. Grandpa was down at Seymour with team and wagon and got hurt. Dr. put 10 clamps on his left arm. Asked Simmons, Hunnicutts, Harriett, Shelby and Mabel to come Friday nite.

April 26

Real cloudy and rather cool all day. Did the washing in the wood house with the hand machine. Violet came down this afternoon. I refixed my rug which I have started.

April 25

Still cloudy and rainy. Mowed front yard. Did mornings work. Cleaned off chicken roosts. Worked on my rug. Dreamed about Rena last nite. Mable and her drove in about 1 o'clock. We were all surprised. Hadn't seen her since July 2, 1931. We three went fishing after a long conversation. Caught 6 little fellows. I can hardly realize that she was here, seems like a dream. A very hard rain tonight.

April 24

Rain, we went to Sun school, back home, fed my chicks and then Ora and I went down home. Helped with the milking tonight. Mowed west side of yard. Got my hood, which mama knit for me. She gave me a voile dress, which was too small for her. Did some reading tonight.

April 23

Did the usual Saturdays cleaning. Hoed onions and cabbage. Set out the dalaha bulbs Mable gave me. Cracked some corn for chicks. Mopped kitchen since supper. Have taken a bath, trimmed my nails, studied S. school lesson, am going to bed.

April 22

Did the mornings work. Helped to cord a rick of wood in wood house. Went to Redington Cemetary with Ezra's and Mabels. Put some fresh dirt in the porch flower box. Carried flowers out of kitchen onto porch. Cleaned out wood shed. Put two of the kitchen screens in. Cleaned off chicxken roosts. Took off 29 baby chicks. Scared the hawk away twice. We four went to the Commencement tonight. Moved wood box and washing machine into wood house. Carried empty cans down cellar.

April 21

Rained a little, until noon, cleared off and sun was awful warm and bright all evening. Helped Ora fix the feed coop and we shut my 27 chicks up in it. Fixed a frame around my tomato seed bed. Set out the dahala bulb mama gave me. Put new front patches on a pair of overalls. Cleaned off the 3 chick coops. went down to Mashino's this P.M. and spoke for some duck eggs. Two settings of eggs beginning to hatch. Ezra, Maude and Donald came at 5 o'clock and just left, going to Mabels for the night.

April 20

Did the ironing and cleaned off chicken roosts. Our rug came from Tri State. did the patching. Big rain this afternoon and more tonight. Mr. and Mrs. Hunnicutt were here tonight. Sewed some quilt blocks. Hawks got two more of my chicks.

April 19

Nice big spring day. Ken has the engine and washer all lined up so I did the washing out under the cherry tree. First time with this engine. Reset some pot flowers and set a carnation and two geranium's slips out. Spaded up flower bed in front yard and mama sowed petunia seed in it. Did a little reading and sewed some more rags. Dyed some rags, red for rugs.

April 18

Cleaned off chicken roosts. Sewed rug rags and started braiding a rug. Sold a boar for $12.00 to a Mr. Thoele of Seymour. Set four hens tonight. Helped to do the milking.

April 17

My big dark rooster died last night. We four went to Sunday School. Only 82 out. Mary Simmons and husband was there. Carrie, Bill, Wanda, Ray and Ruth were here this afternoon. Helped do the milking and cracked some corn for chicks. Mable and Shelby were here tonight.

April 16

Stayed in bed, nursing my pains, until 10:30. Done very little the rest of day. Cold and cloudy all day. Had my hair cut. Studied Sunday-school lesson tonight. The folks stopped a minute as they went home. Cream, 15 cents.

April 15

Still another frost but a real spring day. Boys began plowing on Sheedy with horses and colt. Cleaned off chicken roosts and chick coops. Cleaned back yard and most all of chicken yard this afternoon. Sewed more rags tonight. Ora went and paid the taxes this P.M.

April 14

Another big frost, nice sunshine. Did some patching. Worked on some quilt blocks. Read the papers. Robert purchased two quilts this morning $12.60. Sewed some rug rags tonight.

April 13

Feeling rather bum. Cold wind and sun not very warm. Did some patching and worked on some of Velma's quilt blocks. Received a letter from Mrs. Ella Starry of Blountstown Florida. Cleaned off chicken roosts. Visited Violet awhile this P.M. Saw a hawk after chicks today. Counted them tonight and 3 are missing, in the last few days.

April 12

A little frosty this morning, a real cold wind but warm sunshine. Did the ironing. Sent 60 bonds to Tri State to get an Axminster rug 27X60. I went down to Mabel's this afternoon. Mama was there, we started a quilt for Velma. Came home with a real headache and my neck tight and painful. Very restless, up and down. Didn't get to sleep until 10 o'clock. Frank Edwards, of Columbus purchased a $12.50 boar this P.M.

April 11

Did the washing. Cleaned off chicken roosts. Cracked some corn for chicks. Mowed front yard and it lookd real nice, raked a little in back yard. Sold six hogs at $3.70 today. Eggs 8 1/2 cents. Hogs $44.53.

April 10

Still cloudy and drizzled rain often all day. Went to Sunday school, we four, Violet and Mable. Helped do the milking both times as Ken was gone north, with Bob and Sara. Did some reading and played music this evening.

April 9

Still cloudy and damp. Did the usual cleaning and patched this afternoon. Cleaned roosts off and coops out this morning. Heard today that the Jackson Co. Fair would just be a a Co. fair. No premiums paid to non-county residents. Ora's fair career is probably ended. Hope not. Bob was here awhile this P.M. Cream 17 cents.

April 8

Still rainy and real cloudy. Patched rags all day. Violet came over about four and said it was Flossie's birthday. I made pop-corn balls and gave her a handkerchief. Bill took we "six".

April 7

Cleaned off chicken roosts. Helped to set out some onion sets and plant about another bu. of potatoes. Made a bed for sweet peas and sowed them. Raining this afternoon, so I patched a pair of overalls. Boys hitched up Prince for the first.

April 6

Ken and I went to North Vernon, he had his wisdom tooth pulled. Led lady while Ora furrowed out for potatoes and covered part of them. Helped plant 2 1/4 bushels. Set out the 5 plants and 12 Everbearer grandpa gave me. Fixed a bed and sowed a package of L. Beauty tomato seeds. Covered them with muslim. Helped set out 3 cabbage plants.

April 5

Did the ironing and cleaned off dropping boards this morning. Tore out the straw-loft in chicken house and put in more nests. Helped to rake part of chicken yard and made a bed for my five Kellog strawberry plants. We all visited Wanda tonight, 'twas her 40th birthday. Boys sowed oats today.

April 4

Did the washing. The Mr. George Owens from Pekin came for his $15 boar this P.M. Had a nice little visit with his wife and her sister-inlaw. Mama and I visited Nettie Foreman this afternoon. Darned my sweater sleeves. Wrote to hog pedigrees and a letter to I. Newt Brown.
