March 29
Nice and warm all day. Sat down in the orchard and patched Ora's jacket, while watching for the hawk. Ora watched and shot at him, set some traps. Moved my three coops of chicks, up into the back yard. Willard Sheedy came here today for keys to their house. The folks were past tonight. A woman from Ohio was asking and looking for a flour sifter which sifted flour eight times at once. I gave her mine (which she had given to me) to sell to her.
March 28
Warm and nice sunshine. Did the washing by my self as dad was sick. Rained a little just after dinner. Clothes just right to iron, so I did all the ironing. Hawks carried of two of my chicks today. Mabel, Shelby, Violet, Bill , Howard, Robert and Flossie came to celebrate my 21st birthday. They brought pop-corn balls and muffins. Gave me goods for an apron and a china butter plate. Had a fine time.
March 27
Up at five and built the fires. Ora was up all night watching the sow. She had 12 nice, dandy pigs. Nine males. Sunrise invisible, very cloudy and a cold wind. We four went to Sun. School, stopped at Mabels and Velma went with us. Bro. Heller and two young men were there and they played Clarinats. Fine music. 116 out. Robert is taking care of Violet today. Esther, Ruth and Harley were here awhile after dinner. The five sows averaged 12 pigs. Getting colder. Helped Ora do the chores. Bob and Sara were here tonight.
March 26
Ora was up and down all night watching the sow. Received a birthday card from Aunt Maude. Did the usual Saturdays work. Put up rags and strings to scare hawks away from chicks. They have taken some. Velma, Emma and Dean were here this afternoon.
March 25
Cleaned out chicken coops and the roosts off. Took off 11 more chicks. Ken and his folks went to town so, I baked the bread. Mamma and Dean came out this P.M. I helped her finish Velma and Emma's new dresses. More little pigs this P.M. Man took Betty home, Rev. Rodgers started home from Colorado, today.
March 24
Big frost but arm sunshine all day. Made two pairs of summer drawers. A Mr. Brown of Johnson County, a member the State Tax Board, was here looking at male hogs this morning. Harley was out a while, after school.
March 23
Help to do the mornings work, mopped the kitchen, cleaned off chicken roosts. Went and told Violet that she could go to Hayden with us. Received a letter from R. R. Read in the paper about the awful storm Monday night. Helped Lady Aiders to finish the quilt and then visited Wanda. Chicks beginning to hatch. Mamma's birthday. Eggs 10 cents at Hayden.
March 21
Bright, warm sunshine until 10 a.m. Real cloudy rest of day. Sprinkled some this afternoon and a real pour down since dark. Lots of thunder and lightning. Did the washing, cleaned chicken roosts off. Finished making the flower bed along back yard fence and sowed red, white and pink hollyhocks seeds in it. Got 26 eggs from 32 hens. Sold 14 doz at nine and on half cents to Sch. man. The lettuce we sowed some time ago was up and got froze last week. The folks resowed it today.
March 20
We three went to Sunday school, Violet and Mabel went with us. Read the papers and did several odd jobs this afternoon. A little cooler tonight. Sim purchased himself a Ford today.
March 19
Ora was up all night, watching the pigs. I took Ken down to Reharts. Did the usual Saturdays work. Got a hair cut. Chilly and cold wind all day. Coles came and bought 10 doz. eggs to set.
March 18
Warm sunshine all day, but rather muddy. Chicks sure enjoyed the sunshine. Cleaned chicken roosts off and coops out. Also cleaned pantry and cellar. Picked up some wood. Violet came down and brought us a qt. of huckleberries. Helped Ora with the chores, milked five cows and separated the milk. More little pigs arrived today.
March 17
Rained most all night, water everywhere. Read the papers and patched most all day. Dad and I went to Carl Reharts, after Ken this evening. Helped to finish the milking. Bill and his dad were here tonite. Ora was up till 10:30 with the pigs. One year ago today Mike, died.
March 16
Nice sunshine most all morning. But real cloudy all afternoon and is raining now. Did the mornings work and helped tie up the two hams. Read the papers. Did the ironing this P.M. Cleaned roosts off and started to make a flower bed. One year ago toady Mike Sheedy had a stroke.
March 15
Had hot biscuits and sausage for breakfast. Rendered the lard in oven, had about three and a half gal. Had a real headache all day so didn't tackle much. Snow all left today. Turned chicks out in sunshine. Lost one today.
March 14
Ground white with snow when we got up. The men killed a hog. I did the washing, helped cut lard, sausage and I mixed it. Gave Hunnicutts a mess of sausage. Mopped the kitchen after supper. Washed my face, teeth and feet and went to bed. Hogs 5 cents; cream 20 cents; eggs 8 cents. Sold Schlosser man 17 doz.
March 13
Cloudy and a cold wind all day. Went to Sunday School. Violet and Mabel went with us. Visited with us and Ray came for her this evening. Lost two chicks today.
March 12
A cold wind but sun was rather warm this morning. Did the usual Saturdays work and cleaned my chick coops. Getting cooler this P.M.
March 11
Still warmer, but a little snow left yet. Helped do dishes and went to bed for awhile. Stomach out of order. Cleaned roosts off and made a quilt block. We made ice-cream after supper from ice out of horse trough. I cooked it, the cornstarch recipe, and sure was good. Received Ward's map of outstanding events of the last 60 years.
March 10
Did the mornings work, read the papers, done some patching and worked on quilt blocks. Quite a little warmer. Lost a chick. Turned hens out at three o'clock. Finished reading the book this morning. Grandpa was down this A.M. and I learned a little about his relatives. Feel real bum tonight.
March 9
Hogs 5 cents. Seems colder and awful snowy. Finished the ironing, and did some patching. Made biscuits for breakfast. Mopped the kitchen and cared for baby chicks. Started reading a book tonight.
March 8
Still cold and windy. Did the washing and dried most of clothes in the house. Frank was over this P.M. Pat, the assessor was here too. I ironed several pieces. Ken came home this evening.
March 7
Registered the same as yesterday. Too cold to wash. Took care of chicks and read papers. My $1.00 Oxfords and mamma's 86 cent hat came today. Slippers fit fine and don't look so bad either. Ken went to help Red today and isn't home yet. Ora and I just returned from Simmons Roberts birthday, he was 26. Violet and Bill went with us. Cut and made two quilt blocks this afternoon.
March 6
Everything froze up, 10 above zero this morning at Hayden. Went to Sunday-school. Mabel, Aunt Maude, Donald and Violet went with us, only 60 out. Came home did the noon chores and went down to Mabels. The folks, grandpa, Ezra's were there. Covered my 3 coops with old rugs, coats and comforts. Seemed colder.
March 5
Real cloudy and a cold misty rain which turned to snow this afternoon. Ground was all white by night. Took off 11 more chicks. Did the usual days work and read the papers.
March 4
Cold wind from the North. Fixed a chicken coop and took off 10. Some more hatching. Hog market 4.50. Cream 24 cents. Eggs 8 cents. Worked with chickens some way or other all day. We put powder on hens tonight. Bill and his dad were down. Grandpa was here this P.M.
March 3
Helped to put powder on Mam's chickens for lice. Read the papers and did some odd jobs. Helped Ora to rake cobs in hog lot and visited Violet a while this afternoon. Raining some. Violet, Bill, Ora and I went down to Mabels tonite. Rained very hard while we were there. Col. Lindberg's baby was kidnapped Tuesday night. Heard about Alice and Pete Hall's split up. Set a hen.
March 2
Ora and I culled mam's chickens. Took 14 head to Dodds; 12 cents a lb. Went to North Vernon to Dr. Stopped taking the drop medicine. Patched two old pair of overalls this afternoon. Chicks beginning to hatch.
MARCH 1, 1932
Rather cloudy all day and raining some tonite. Did the ironing and some patching. Violet and her mother were down this afternoon. Robert was here tonight, we had a real argument on religion. The boys finished gathering corn today, last years crop. They raised about 2400 bushels of corn this year.
February 29
'Tis the leap day of the leap year. Nice warm sunshine all day. Did the washing and made two quilt blocks. Several odd jobs this evening. Also read the papers. Sold twenty dozen eggs to the Schlosser man, at nine cents. The boys hauled the good hay from the stack, back on the hill, into the barn.
