Did the Saturdays cleaning and helped get dinner. Robert was here. Men threshed our buckwheat this P.M. Had 226 bushels on 26 acres. Some crop! Hand is healed so left bandage off today.


September 23
Did mornings work. Read the papers. Patched all afternoon. Carrie and bill were here this P.M.


September 22
Still cloudy and cool. Helped do mornings work and read the papers. Ora took Mama to Dr. this P.M. I did some patching this afternoon and picked some beans. Mabel and Shelby here a few minutes. My folks were here awhile tonight. Our cream man delivered our fertilizer this P.M. Feeling rather bum.


September 21
Cloudy and cool all day. Rained a little. Boys left early this A.M. and returned late this P.M. Purchased a male hog from G. J. Carwein and Son at Arlington for $17.50. Wanda was here all day, did their ironing and some mending this P.M. I did lots of mending today.


September 20
Rained all day and is still at it. Washed dishes and milk utensils with the one hand this A.M. Did the sweeping and read the paper. Saw that S.M. Riggle is to be our paster, with the parsonage at Dupoint instead of Vernon. Church every two weeks now. Sara and Bob here today. She made 7 gallons of kraut this P.M. for us. Feeling rather bum tonite.


September 19
Did part of work with one hand. Ora took me to Dr. He took clamp out and dressed it up again, said probably would be O.K. by last of week. Charged me $1.50 for the two times. Did the washing this P.M. Got 18 cents for eggs this A.M. School started.


September 18
Wanda and I did mornings work. Found sorghum running over cellar floor. Can had sprung a leak. Took Wanda home as we went to S.S. Heard about Waty's death. Ma not able to go.


September 17
Cleaned 2 bedrooms; living room and kitchen up with the one hand. Wanda came this evening and baked pies and helped with work. I broke a lamp bowl and of course coal-oil went over table and kitchen floor. Wanda slept with me. Mama not feeling so well.


September 16
Did mornings work and started cleaning cans for the saccrine (saccharin) pickles. Knife slipped and cut a deep hole in thick part of left hand. Ora took me to Dr. Grossman. Put a clamp in and am not to use it. Mabel, Shelby and dad P. here a few minutes tonite. Frank Machino's got a new boy.


September 15
Did mornings work and the ironing. Started mending Ken's jacket. Took mama T. to Dr. this P.M.


September 14
Did mornings work and the washing. Did some mending and picked two rows navy beans this P.M. Mama canned 7 pints of shelled beans this evening. Three pigs still living from the litter of 12.


September 13
Prepared corn to dry this A.M. Fixed recipe twice. Helped to pull or pick the kidney beans and butter beans. Made a batch of sorghum cookies. Sure nice moonlight nights. Mowed the yard this P.M.


September 12
Helped to pick and work up more grapes. Made 3 pts. of butter; 5 of preserves and 13 pts. of juice.


September 11
Helped do morning's work.Violet, dad and I went to S.S. Probably Minister's last time. Read papers and rested this P.M. Shelby, Mable were here tonite. Ora's grandad Cross would have been 100 years old today, if he were living.


September 10
Velma and I cleaned all the house up, got dinner and etc. Uncle Ezra and 2 boys stopped a minute this p.m. Wanda, Ray, Ruth and Rachel were here tonight. Velma went home this evening. Ora is watching more pigs.


September 9
Did the ironing. Velma came here this a.m. We took mama to Dr. this afternoon. Wanda went too. Willard Sheedy arrived here this a.m. Did some mending tonite. Velma is staying all night.


September 8
Did mornings work and the washing this a.m. Cleaned chicken roosts and coops this evening. Helped feed the pigs. Dampened clothes. Sows a little better.


September 7
Real cool this a.m. Picked and canned 5 qt. of grapes. Helped feed the pigs and keep bottles clean. Killed flies in kitchen. Shelby, Mabel, Ma P. and Emma were here after tomatoes this evening. Hogs still sick. Robert is here now. Adam and Laura were married this a.m.


September 6
Feeling better, helped do mornings work and picked and helped can 6 quts. of grapes. have had a bad pain in left chest most all day. Called Dr. Elrod for two sick sows this morning. Ora is bathing their udders with hot water every hour today. Feeding 1 litter of pigs this afternoon. Sold huxter 26 lbs. chickens at 10 cents. Ken bought 9 nipples and some bottles and are feeding the 12 pigs. Heard about Marion Bailey having a youngster. Ate fried onions and greased in their grease and turpentine and went to bed with hot water bottle.  Ma P. here a few minutes.


September 5
Got up with a sore throat and face bad headache and a cold. Laid around all day and doctored. Mamma canned 2 qts. of grapes. My folks awhile as they went home tonite. Caught some chickens to sell tomorrow. Ora up till 11:30 tonite with pigs.

September 4
Up late, did mornings work and went to S.S. Mama T, Violet and her mother, dad and I visited Ringers this afternoon. Had a hard rain just afternoon. Heard about Alice Hall's accident. Mary Miller Dean has a boy. Wanda and Ray were here a few minutes this evening. Helped do milking and feeding rather bum. Mr. Hunnicutt gave us another squirrel. Ora was up until 12:30 with little pigs.

September 3
Rained all last night and most all morning. Real cloudy all day. Cleaned all the house up and did some patching this p.m. Mama, Ora and I went to North Vernon to Dr. tonite. Visited Wanda afterwards. Ora has a bad cold. Sim brought his cattle home today.

September 2
Read the papers and did some patching this a.m. Picked and seeded grapes and mama canned 6 qts. Mowed the yard this evening. Somebody killed Spot our big white cat (in the road) last night. Hunnicutts Bob mule died this morning.  A nice gentle rain, which we needed badly. Studied S.S. lesson.

Septemeber 1
Did morning's work. Picked and canned 4 qts. of plums. Pressed the boys suits and 3 dresses. Mrs. Hunnicutt here this p.m.


SEPTEMBER 1, 1932
August 31
Did a large ironing this a.m. Helped to cold-pack 14 qt. of beans this p.m. Ora started cutting corn this afternoon. Hogs $4.40. A real hot day. Hay fever.

August 30
The kids went home before breakfast. did the washing this a.m. Very hot and I had hay fever bad this p.m. Napped part of p.m. My folks came and Simmon's kids, Violet and Bill and we 3 went to surprise mabel as Thursday is her 23 birthday. I took dog sandwiches.


August 29
Up early. Made 2 pies. Cleaned up house and helped carry things to shop. Had the biggest crowd at sale today, that we ever had. Hayden ladies served lunch, ice-cream and pop. sale totaled $508. Ken delivered several hogs this evening. Mabel, Shelby and Larna were here all night. Esther and Jimmie were here today. A large crowd and everyone seemed happy. 


August 28
Went to S.S. Esther, Alva and Wanda were here this a.m. Mabel, Shelby and Larna were here this afternoon. Robert here all day. My folks here late this p.m. Uncle Charlie and Frank here for the nite and tomorrow. Cloudy all p.m. but no rain. This is the day before we know our fate of tomorrow. Ma T's 64th birthday. Mowed the yard this afternoon. Helped milk. Sam Emily committed suicide this p.m.


August 27
Still cloudy but no rain. Cleaned all the house up. Scrubbed the toilet. Had my hair cut. Studied S.S. lesson and took a bath. Mowed some grass.


August 26
Fixed beans ready for dinner. Canned 7 qts. of plums and helped prepare the shop for sale lunch and put 1 gal. pickles in it. Cream 16 cents. Had a small shower in night.


August 25
Did morning's work. Picked and canned 7 1/2 qts. tomatoes. Made a bread pudding. Ken took his ma and pa to the Purdue Picnic today. Ora and I kept house. Received a package from Indianapolis. Worked on a dress, which came this a.m. and finished mowing yard this p.m. Picked pickles, beans and fed all the chickens. Real hot today.


August 24
Did morning's work. Cleaned and oiled chicken roosts. Mowed part of yard. Ma T, Voilet and I went to jackson Co. Fair this p.m.


August 23
Helped do morning's work and went up to help Mabel get straightened up. Worked up there till noon and we all went down to ma P.'s and cleaned up their house. Ora and dad attended jackson Co. Fair.


August 22
Did the washing and most of ironing. Mama finished it, as Ora and I went to help Mabel set up. They moved back to grandpa's place this p.m. Eggs 14 cents; Cream 18 cents; Hogs $4.90.


August 21
Went to S.S. this a.m. Went up home this afternoon. Ora and Ken went to Vallonia with Sim this p.m.,  to  look at cattle. Heard about Adam and Laura's wedding announcement. Heard about Barbour trading his farm for Anderson property. Ma P. gave me a new pair of scissors.


August 20
Cleaned all the house up except kitchen, while Ora, dad, Bill and his dad went to Brownstown this p.m. so I went as far as Mabels and visited. Sterling arrived from Ill this p.m. Mabel and Shelby are discouraged and talking of leaving Crawford's place. Mopped kitchen tonite. Helped do milking.


August 19
Canned 30 qts. tomatoes this a.m. Also 2 qts. plums and some catsup this afternoon. Velma was here this p.m. I picked some grapes. Real cool tonite. Shelby and Mabel married 5 years today.

August 18

Cloudy this a.m and lots cooler. Did mornings work, made some plum butter and jelly, made a dutch apple pie and got dinner. Ora took Ma, I to Dr. this a.m. and put up some sale bills. Picked and seeded two gallons green plums this p.m. Have the hay fever very bad this aftenoon and night.

August 17

Helped pick and can 24 qts of tomatoes today. Had a nice little shower this evening. The Lindbergs have another son.

August 16

Did a large ironing. Velma and Dean were here today. Did some patching this p.m. Killed the flies and put up the clean curtains this evening. We visited Carry Ringer tonite. She is sick and Violet is working for them. Sold 4 chicks 12 cents - $1.44.

August 15

Did the washing. Washed all the curtains in sitting room. Cleaned the cellar this afternoon. Eggs 13 1/2 cents. Hogs $4.90. Cream 17 cents. Fixed the mixture and started the 3 gal. saccrine pickle process.

August 14

Went to S. School and church. Sara and Bob were here for dinner. Dorothy, Wanda and Ray were here this p.m. Ate watermelon. Picked pickles, helped do the milking. Fixed sale bills to send to Col. Eddleman.

August 13

Cleaned all the house up. Washed 2 of my dresses and ironed them. Polished our shoes. Cleaned chick coops and roosts off. Studied S.S. lesson tonite and did a little patching. Picked the pickles. Had my hair cut.

August 12

Feeling rather bum. Mowed yard and read the papers this morning. Canned 14 qts. tomatoes this afternoon. Ate melon tonight. Dad P. hauled wood with our mules today. Picked the pickles.

August 11

Prepared dinner and all went to Jennings Free Fair for all day. Velma, Emma and Dean went with us. Had four first watermelon today. Got the hog sale bills today and they are fine. Saw Carsons at fair.

August 10

Up early, fried the chicken and got ready and went with Aunt Maude and family on a trip. We went to N. Madison, Madison, Craigmont and to Clifty Falls. We visited the Larrier Home in Madison. Home at 3:30, worked button holes on shirt this evening.

August 9

Did the ironing this a.m. Made Dean's shirt this p.m. Sewed the buttons on it tonite. 
Cleaned a chicken this evening.

August 8

Did all mornings work as mama was sick. Did a large washing. Aunt Maude and the six kids were here this p.m. I cut a shirt out for Dean. Worked some on shirt tonite.

August 7

Had a hard rain last night. Went to S. S. Violet and I walked up home this p.m. Ora and Ken went with S__ to Welches. Ezra, Maude and mama P. went to Fairview today. Dad P. kept all the kids. Helped do milking. Cleaned chicken coops off this evening.

August 6

Cleaned all the house up this a.m. Velma and Dean were here today. Made dad P. a suit of underwear this p.m. Studied S. S. lesson and took a bath.

August 5

Peeled and canned nine qts. of tomatoes. Read the papers and patched overalls this p.m. Hoed late cabbage.

August 4

Sprinkled cucumbers with lime and calcium arsenate. Went to N. Vernon to Dr. Got some more tablets for my throat and he says I have a touch of hay fever. Did some patching this p.m. and mowed the yard. Sold five roosters this a.m. for 12 cents a lb. Ora bought tankage for $1.20 today.

August 3

Dampened clothes this a.m. Helped do mornings work, read papers. Did the ironing this p.m. Wanda was here this afternoon. Caught some roosters to sell. The wind blowed lots of corn over.

August 2

Rained during last night and rained most all this morning. Sun shone part of afternoon and clothes got dry but my we had a big flood late this evening. Some wind and too much water now. Removed everything from pantry and cleaned it thoroughly and caught that mouse. Could not get cows across creek tonight. Helped Ora write a sample sale bill.

AUGUST 1, 1932

Cloudy all day and had a little rain. Did the washing but it didn't get dry. Cleaned chicken roosts and coops. Plowed the late cabbage. Mama P. started to work again today. Mary Bishop also. Lots cooler tonight. Harley was here for dinner.

July 31

Helped do mornings work and Ora and I visited Carsons. Had all kind of good eats. Took a big drive up above Edinburg to Runkle's farm. Got home at dark. My folks were here and had milking about done. They brought a gal of ice cream down. Second time that I've missed S.S. this year. Tula, Ed and William here today.

July 30

Did mornings work. Dad stopped and said to go get their chicks. Rats taking them had 40 out of 100. Ora and I went after them. Picked some tomatoes and cleaned all the house up. Patched some this p.m. Went after cows, helped do milking. Took a bath and doctored Ora's chiggers.

July 29

Helped do mornings work and cleaned berries. Ora picked 2 1/2 gal this a.m. Cooked all them and made jelly. Mowed the yard. Helped do milking. Received a card from Carsons. Velma and Emma here p.m.

July 28

Dusted the cucumbers. Made a rhubarb pie. Cleaned chicken nests out and sprayed with hot water and coal oil. Read the papers. Watered hogs at noon as Ora was gone all day sowing b. wheat. Hatched four chicks and put the eleven in orchard. Helped to milking. Patched some this p.m. Finished sowing b. wheat.

July 27

Had a nice little shower in the night. Did the ironing this a.m. Pressed Ora's suit and two dresses. Patched all afternoon. Helped with milking. Sara and Bob were here tonight. Ora took ma T. to Dr. this a.m. and he sowed buckwheat on Sheedy this p.m.

July 26

Cloudy most all morning. Did a large washing. Ironed the clothes which had no starch this P.M. Also gave the Ford a cleaning and shined it. Dampened clothes. Helped do milking. Found a hen with 7 chickens.

July 25

Hoed pickles and beans and stuck the beans. Cleaned chicken roosts and coops. Mama and kids here this P.M. I went to Seymour with Ora this afternoon. Picked some tomatoes and helped reset late cabbage plants. Helped milk both times. Saw Mabel's new home a minute.

July 24

Went to S. S. Mowed part of yard this A.M. The folks Mabel and Shelby came and I went to creek with them. Ray, Wanda, Esther and Ruth were here this P.M. Wrote Carsons a letter tonite. Ora's feeling bum.

July 23

Cleaned all the house. Washed and ironed my green dress. Mama brought us some cucumbers. Canned 2 qts. Bill helped make hay. Helped do the milking.

July 22

Did mornings work. Picked 2 gal. B. berries. Helped can 10 qt berries and 5 qt. beets. My oxfords came from Sears & Co. today. Another real hot day.
